A boat custom tailored for the task...
The Upper Suwannee is a scary place for most boaters, and this includes most locals. The river god's love sacrifices of props and lower-units! With multiple limestone rock shoals, submerged rockheads and sunken deadfall timber, the odds are not in your favor.
Our primary boat is the Colorado-made, SW17 by Hog Island Boatworks, paired with a Jet-drive Yamaha outboard, this boat is made for swift, rocky waters. The boats made by Hog Island fit the need for abrasion and impact resistance, being roto-molded Hi-Density Poly-Ethylene, similar to recreational kayaks and Yeti coolers.
The Yamaha Jetdrive has zero draft bellow the boats keel. These motors have a long tradition on Pacific Northwest rivers, and are perfect for the conditions on the Upper Suwannee.
While fishing, we are oar-powered for the greatest degree of stealth and control over boat positioning -we aren't worried about being under a backcast, just maybe a little worried about being under your backcast...
Plenty of cooler space
We are good with just about anything except hard liquor and glass beer bottles. There's a Publix at the I-10 exit; subs and fruit are recommended... oh yeah, we loath shredded lettuce and fried chicken crumbs on the boat deck. Choose spinach. We provide water.
Dry storage for gear
Rod tubes, tackle bags, photo/video gear, totes, backpacks -we have stowage. Mostly dry compartments, but nothing's guaranteed. Pack smart 'cause you never know, don't hesitate to ask for guidance if you are unsure about your kit.
Useful additions
This is not a day on the Islamorad flats, but sun and heat can be a factor; longsleeve, hat, sunscreen -NO ARESOL, please. Shoulder seasons (the best fishing!) can have a chilly start...layers!
Lite-weight packable rain jackets are smart. No clunky boots- stealth is everything!
