The Upper Suwannee

The Heart of Darkness in the middle of North Florida

Flowing from Georgia's Okeefenokee Swamp, spilling  over Florida's limestone karst fall-line, before beginning  it's two-hundred mile serpentine path to the Gulf, the Upper Suwannee has a reputation for dark water limestone shoals (rapids), boulder-like rockheads, fluctuating water levels and long, remote sections with few boat ramps.  This is the ideal formula for low-pressure fishing and a first-rate nature experience.

The river is dark, yet clear, like nicely-done iced tea.  The coppery, tea -like color comes from tannin dyes gained as Okeefenokee rainshed waters leach through the peats and leaf duff of the swamp basin.  From Big Shoal, north of White springs to the fork of the Alapaha River, she gets fed by small spring runs and limestone seeps of crystal clear ground water.  Clarity varies with rainfall and river levels, but generally the  good, but limited visibility makes for fish with an aggressive, ambush style of predation.   The limestone crags and submerged timber make ideal "hides" for bass and panfish.

Untouched scenery and free-flowing wild river fishing on the Upper Suwannee River

This is one of the best kept secrets in the Southeast. The large majority of rivers in the South are dammed somewhere along their run.     science have agreed this disrupts natural life cycles of dozens of both fresh and saltwater species.  The Upper Suwannee is unique in that it is free-flowing, wild from source waters to the delta; this is how a 40 mile stretch of river, 150 miles from the Gulf, can hold snook, Gulf sturgeon, mullet, and freshwater bass species.  90% of the Upper Suwannee is undeveloped, State-Protected river bank on both sides, with deep land buffers in many sections.
